Russland, 5. Juli 1943... Das deutsche Oberkommando startet die 3. Sommeroffensive im Krieg gegen Russland. Das Unternehmen "Zitadelle" hat zum Ziel, die sowjetische Frontausbuchtung bei Kursk abzuschneiden und den Feind einzukesseln. Damit soll die Ausgangsbasis für weitere Angriffsoperationen geschaffen werden. So treten an diesem Tag die 9. Armee (Generaloberst Model), die 2. Armee in der Mitte (Generalfeldmarschall von Kluge) und die 4. Panzerarmee (Hoth) im Süden zum Angriff an. Beteiligte Einheiten im Südabschnitt: Als vorderste Spitze die 1. SS Panzerdivision LAH, linkerhand etwas zurückgesetzt die 3. SS Panzerdivision Totenkopf, rechterhand die 6. Panzerdivision und dahinter folgt etwas zurück die 2. SS Panzerdivision DR.
