Berlin - April 30, 1945

After the successfull encirclement of the city on April 24, Soviets forces began the attack on the city itself. With only 45.000 troops of mixed composition (Heer, Waffen SS, Police, Volkssturm) available to hold of the Soviet onslaught, many breakthroughs were achieved in the days following the start of the offensive.

By the 30th of May the city's defensive line had completely crumbled, leaving all remaining defenders trapped in the heart of the city.

In the early morning hours of April 30, the Soviet 3rd Shock army -under the command of general Kuznetsov- was ready to cross the Moltke bridge and begin the assault on the battle of Berlin's ultimate prize: the Reichstag

Without the prospect of victory or escape only one option remained: fight to the death.
