Hi, a few questions

Hi all,

I used to play sudden strike 2 but stopped for a few years, only just seen this mod which i wish i knew about a while ago.

Anyway, i'm looking at creating an accurate reconstruction of the Arnhem Battle in September 1944. I made it before with the original game but it would be so much better with this mod.

I would like to make it multiplayer but the only way it'll work in regards to historical accuracy is to have no zeps and have timed reinforcements. Can this be done?
Also can units arrive on the map from different directions?

I want to play it both ways, as the 1st Airborne and as II Pz Corps, my dad likes his strategy so got someone to play against : )
As the British, troops arrive as close to the time they entered the battle as possible. So the start of the game you begin with several platoons of Pathfinders who land, mark LZ (setting of a trigger) for the 1st Airlanding Brigade to land and secure the LZ's.

I want to allow enough time for the player to get to grips with his troops instead of several hundred trasports dropping the whole division in one hit, by staggering the first lift, it will allow the player to sort it out. This game won't be a quick hour or two so it's not going to be made for general multiplayer play.

After the AirL Brigade arrives, maybe 5 mins later Div HQ (officers, jeeps, medics, enginners etc) land along with the light artillery regiment and the 1st AB Recce Squadron , then again a few minutes later the 1st Para Brigade. By the time the 1st have landed you are ready to move out for your primary objective...Arnhem Bridge. Like i said no zeps but an historical objective to take and hold the Arnhem bridge or as the mission continues and the situation gets tougher, any sort of crossing over the lower Rhine.

The mission will be played from two sides, being multiplayer so the German player will be given the immediate mission of blocking a suspected attack towards Arnhem Bridge. So your initial units, are the SS Training Battalion, which by chance was in the area. As soon as the game starts you will have elements of these troops to set up a defence near the LZ's (orginally Model (commander Army Group B) thought the Para's were Commando's sent to capture him!)

AS the game goes on you will slowly receive more reinforcements, artillery, Sp guns low grade infantry and eventually the hardened waffen SS units of the 9th SS PZ Div. I am hoping units can enter the battle from different parts of the field because the germans attacked the LZ's from the west whilst the British attack battalions tried to break through to the east.

gameplay: anyone familar with Arnhem will know how impossible it was for the 1st Airborne and the way everything went wrong, except for 2 Para using the southern route to make it to the bridge largely unmolested.
playing as the allies you'll have to husband all your resources, fend of attacks so that the rest of the div can land safely, whilst pushing for the important bridge. if you hold out (big if) the Irish Guards of 30 Corps will arrive in the southern part of the map... but will german forces have cleared the bridge intime to race a blocking force to prevent a link up?. Then when you add the polish drop on the southern side and their attempts to cross the river you have quite a lot of action packed gameplay.

As the German player you know you'll get stronger whilst the enemy gets weaker, but you are tied as to the quality of your reinforcements and the stubborn brilliance of the para's. So any foothold by the Airborne on Arnhem Bridge will make the German player have to work harder. Also by not driving the airborne of the LZ's, RAF supply drops will land and the supplies collected...thus prolonging the fight and allowing more time for the Poles and Guards to arrive.

If it goes right, then the game will end much like it did in real, but there are elements there to to keep it in the balance.

as a side note I have great respect and interest in Market-Garden and feel it's not talked about enough, there are so many feats of courage oj both sides and the scale and omportance riding on the operation could have made for a very different europe. The allies were one bridge away..1 mile away from crossing the Rhine in force, then Monty could have rampaged through the industrial haert of germany and on to berlin thus no berlin wall and russian oppression in east germany and probally no the scale of tension between east and west..maybe???

It was the largest airborne operation ever, 4 VC's were won at Arnhem (2 in one battlaion, the only unit in whole british army during WW2 to have done so), another VC won for the RAF pilot, with utter disregard for his own life, died in a vain attempt to supply the struggling para's on the ground. The voted bravest action of the war...the 82nd Airborne suicidal daytime crossing of the Waal.
The defence of hells highway, the 9 day stand by the 1st Airborne when their own Corps commander said they can hold for no more thn 4 days!
and not to mention the german reaction to the landings.

my apologies if i went on a bit!

Not at all, going on a bit leads to more information.

Unfortunately I don't think it's possible to do some of that, I don't really know. It's been a while since I touched the RWM map editor (or RWM for that matter :? ) AFAIK you can't choose which direction the reinforcements will come from, it mifght be possible with triggers if you make it so only 4 players can play, I'm not too sure.

I see you have quite an interest in operation market garden and your Eglish is quite good, are you native or have you learned it at a school/college etc? Just curious

I'm glad I was here right now, it's been rarer and rarer for me to be around lately and I've found a topic worth my attention :)

-Albrecht Over, but definitely not out.

Thanks for your reply.

Reading back my English was not the best and there are no excuses cause I am English and live in West Sussex!

I guess next time i should read what i have written back before i post my message : )

It's interesting reading or at least trying to read the German posts...i have learnt a lot from finding out some of the words mean. May even take it up : )

I am very interested in Market-Garden, not deflecting away from any other engagements and efforts made by servicemen (my Great Uncle Jack was wounded at Monte Cassino as a riflemen in the London Irish), but Market-Garden has always touched me. Not only the efforts and sacrifice on both sides but the way the Dutch people, who suffered greatly, never blamed the Allies for the death and destruction brought on them and still to this day children are brought up to respect the sacrifice, not only by learning at school but by placing flowers and crosses on every war grave.

No problems mate! I'm from Hampshire, right on the border with berkshire. Everyone slips up now and then.

London Irish? My Granddad was an engineer, landed on Dday +1 and went right the way up through, possibly even to arnhem...

Unfortunately I can't help you with your scripting, the guys round here are great  and will most likely help you if you give them a little time and some respect.

Enjoy your stay, heck... You might even see me around. ;)

I was talking to an elderly couple who live near me, he was also an Engineer during the war. He took part in two D-Days - Sicily and then Normandy, both first day landings.

My uncle Jack served with the London Irish Rifles in Italy. Not sure which battalion, a 2nd was raised during the war. The 1st served in Iraq and then Italy whilst the 2nd served in North Africa then Italy can't tell which battlaion he was in untill i talk to him again. He took a wound to the arm, shrapnel i think and returned to England. But he loved his army days.

The London Irish Rifles were the London Regiment before the war and are now C or D company not quite sure which... of the London Regiment, a TA unit.

OK, so you're making an operation market garden scenario, one problem... I don't think there are any gliders in RWM. It'd be a shame to let that stop you though, maybe use C47s in their place or ask barbarossa? Anyways. Good to see a new member to the SS2 community, this place can use everyone it can get. ;)
