Adding Terrains & Game Refresh ?

[1] Using the SS Graphics Tool,how do I add 2 or 3 more terrains to an already existing scheme ?
Also what file contains the terrains ?
I've seen terrain counts of 8 and the one that I have has 7.
[2] How do I keep the game from refreshing the maps ?
If you notice that during a game where there is heavy ground damage,the game will kind of "CLEAN UP" the battlefield resulting in the map changing.
This removes a lot of the battle damage and ground scarring which takes away from the game's detail.
